Key Takeaways

  • Most riders I look after do well with a professional service every 6 to 12 months. If you commute daily, book sooner.
  • Winter mileage across London and Surrey counts as hard use. Wet grit gets into everything and chews through chains, pads and bearings much faster than dry summer miles.
  • Motors, batteries and firmware are not areas for guesswork. Every system has a proper diagnostic route, and it pays to follow it.
  • You can happily check tyre pressure, brake feel, chain lube and bolt security at home. Battery wiring is where I’d stop.
  • Preventive servicing works out cheaper than waiting for a grinding brake or a skipping chain to force your hand.

Hassle-Free e-Bike Services at Your Doorstep

As a rule, I’d service an e-bike at least once a year for light use, every six months for regular riding, and more often again for daily commuting or winter riding.

An e-bike is still a bicycle. But the motor, battery, sensors and software add a layer of checks that a standard bike service just doesn’t cover.

How Often Should You Service Your E-Bike? A Complete Guide to Servicing Schedules and Checklists

This is the question I get asked more than any other, usually by riders who depend on one bike for the school run, the station hop or a soggy commute across South London.
And my answer is always the same. Set yourself a schedule, then bring it forward the moment the bike starts feeling noisy, sluggish or electrically odd.

Why regular e-bike servicing matters

Regular servicing protects your safety, your range, your ride quality and the value of some genuinely expensive electrical parts. E-bikes wear faster than standard bikes because the motor helps you carry more speed and more load. Brakes, chains and tyres all end up working harder for it.
If you leave things too long, the small faults start stacking up.
A dry chain will chew through a cassette. Weak brake pads overheat on hills. Loose connectors trigger assistance that cuts in and out for no obvious reason, and tired tyres make a heavy bike feel nervous the moment it rains.
Battery and firmware issues matter for warranty conversations too. When a bike has been checked properly, I can produce far clearer evidence of what went wrong and when.

How often you should service your e-bike: A general schedule

I always weigh mileage and riding style together when I set someone’s servicing schedule.
Broadly speaking, a lightly used e-bike is fine with a yearly visit. A regular rider wants attention every 6 months.
And a daily commuter should be seen every three to six months if the bike lives outdoors or rides through winter grime.

Rider typeTypical service timingWhat to watch most closely
Casual riderEvery 6 to 12 monthsTyre condition, cable stretch, battery storage habits
Daily commuterEvery 3 to 6 monthsBrake pads, chain wear, lights, wet-weather corrosion
Road or mountain riderAfter heavy blocks of ridingBearings, suspension, drivetrain load, impact damage

With a road bike maintenance schedule, mileage is the thing driving everything. With mountain bike service intervals, mud and impacts matter far more.
On an e-bike, motor strain and battery behaviour sit on top of all that same thinking.

At Domex Bikes, we list our service tiers around actual use, from occasional riding through to intensive riding.

E-bike service intervals: Battery, motor and electrical health checks

I’d inspect the electrical side of a high-end e-bike at least once a year, and sooner if the range drops off, error codes appear or the assistance starts feeling delayed.
There’s no sense in opening sealed parts for the sake of it. The point is to test the system properly before a vague symptom turns into an expensive diagnosis.
A proper e-bike service covers battery contacts, charge-port condition, loom routing, display connections, speed sensor position and motor mounting points.

Our e-bike service covers Shimano Steps, Di2 and Bosch Smart Systems fault diagnostics, with a separate e-bike callout and assessment fee of £44.77.

Bosch’s partner portal describes access to DiagnosticTool 3 and service case handling for trained partners.
Shimano’s E-TUBE PROJECT Professional can check error history, unit logs and usage for Shimano STEPS and Di2 systems.
All of which matters a great deal when the bike in question weighs 20 to 25kg and is far too awkward to haul across town.

Signs your e-bike needs a service now

Your e-bike needs attention now if it sounds rough, stops unpredictably, shifts badly or behaves strangely under assistance. Trust your hands and your ears here.
Most of the costly failures I deal with started life as a small change in feel.
Grinding brakes: Stop riding if braking feels harsh or metallic.

  • Chain skipping: Suspect chain and cassette wear, particularly under motor load.
  • Motor hesitation: Check sensors, connectors, firmware and battery state.
  • Reduced range: Look at temperature, tyre pressure, battery health and drag.
  • Error codes: Write the code down before you clear anything.

Please don’t keep riding just because the motor is still helping you along.
A skipping drivetrain will ruin more parts while you use it, and a spongy brake can turn a simple pad change into a full bleed or a rotor job.

E-bike service vs e-bike repair: What’s the difference?

The difference between a service and a repair is fairly straightforward.
A service is preventive maintenance. A repair fixes a fault you already know about.
Servicing stops the bike drifting out of adjustment, while repair work deals with the thing that has already gone wrong.
A service normally takes in inspection, adjustment, lubrication, wear measurement and safety checks.
On an e-bike, it also means diagnostics, firmware, connectors and general system behaviour.
A repair is much narrower. A puncture, a brake bleed, a new chain, a spoke replacement or some fault finding after an error code.
Consistent servicing won’t spare you every repair. But in my experience it keeps repairs smaller and a lot less stressful.

Which e-bike parts need regular servicing?

The parts that need regular servicing are the ones exposed to load, water, grit and vibration. On an e-bike, the normal bike components come first, and then the battery and motor checks get layered on top.
Chains usually need replacing somewhere around 1,000 to 3,000 miles, depending on weather, cleaning habits and how much torque you put through them.
Brake pads might last a few months under heavy commuting, or a great deal longer for light weekend use.
Tyres want checking for cuts, squared-off tread and embedded glass.
Cables and housing often feel sticky after a wet winter, and the headset, hub and bottom bracket bearings want checking for play or roughness.
The e-bike-specific parts need a different mindset entirely. Battery cells, motor bearings and controller wiring are not casual DIY territory.
What I’m looking for is heat marks, moisture, crushed cables, loose magnets and damaged terminals. From there I decide if software diagnostics or brand support needs to come into it.

Simple checks you can do between professional services

A short weekly check catches an awful lot early. This checklist is meant to build awareness at home, with electrical diagnosis and precision adjustment left to a certified technician.

  • Check tyre pressure and look for glass, splits or bulges.
  • Squeeze both brakes before you set off and listen for scraping.
  • Wipe the chain, then lubricate it if it looks dry or sounds noisy. There’s a full guide to lubricating a bike chain if you want the simple method.
  • Confirm the battery locks in firmly and the display powers up cleanly.
  • Look over visible bolts, racks and mudguards for any movement.

And if the bike is filthy after bad weather, clean it before the dirt hardens around the drivetrain.

Our bike cleaning guide for London and Surrey cyclists keeps that job simple.

What a professional e-bike service includes and how much it costs

A professional e-bike service combines the normal mechanical work with electrical health checks.
I’d expect any mechanic to assess brakes, gears, wheels, tyres, headset, bottom bracket, chain wear, bolt security and the e-bike system itself where the brand tools allow it.
Cost then scales with the depth of that work.

Domex service optionPublished price and timeBest fit
Tune Up£68.23, up to 30 minsA bike that rides well but needs crisp adjustment
Regular Use£177.25, up to 120 minsMost-day commuters needing deeper attention
Intensive Use£252.73, up to 190 minsDaily riders, high mileage bikes and tired drivetrains

We also list our general callout and assessment fee and the maintenance tiers are published openly.

A mobile tune-up suits light adjustment. A fuller maintenance service is the right call once wear, winter grime or fault finding needs more time.
The convenience is real, too. The van comes to your home, your workplace or the roadside, so nobody has to lift a heavy e-bike into a car.

When and how to book a professional e-bike service

The right time to book is when mileage, weather or warning signs push the bike beyond what home checks can handle.
Booking also makes sense before a long trip, after a hard winter, or any time an error code shows up twice.
For UK road-legal e-bikes, legality is worth keeping in mind as well. GOV.UK states that an electrically assisted pedal cycle must have pedals, a motor rated no higher than 250 watts continuous power, and assistance that cuts off at 15.5mph.
If your bike has been modified, tell us before anyone connects software to it.
When you’re ready, pick the right package from our bike services and repairs page and book a Cytech-trained mobile mechanic at whatever location suits your day.

The service was absolutely brilliant. My partner and I have had our e bikes for 8 years and tried several companies for service over that period. Domex was excellent. We really liked having the service at our home where we could talk directly to Adam who carried out the service, ask questions and understand what was being done and the reason behind it, rather than receiving an anonymous invoice.

First time using a mobile bike mechanic and definitely won't be the last. Adam provided a first rate service, turned up as scheduled with a professional and friendly demeanor, no job was too small. Adam serviced my carbon road bike and swapped out some parts and now the bike looks and feels like new ! Pricing was similar to a bike shop however the convenience of not having to wait 2 to 4 weeks to be booked in, the time/hassle saved from not having to drop off and pickup and having your bike worked on by skilled mechanics means it's a no brainer. Give Domex a try !

First class service of my road and gravel bike. Lewis was very approachable, informative and above all doesn’t do anything not strictly necessary - despite this being my first experience of Domex, I immediately knew this wouldn’t be the ‘hard sell’ and engendered a trust similar to local mechanics from your indie bike shop (no longer an option in our area). Convenient too - the van operates as both a parts store as well as a mobile workshop. Will use again - thanks gents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I service my e-bike like a normal bicycle?

The basic mechanical checks are the same, so tyres, brakes and chain care all carry over. The battery, motor wiring and firmware should never be treated as normal bicycle parts.

Do I need diagnostics if the e-bike still rides?

Book diagnostics if the range drops, the assistance cuts in late or an error code keeps coming back. A perfectly rideable e-bike can still be hiding a developing connector, sensor or software fault.

Can Domex Bikes come to my home or workplace?

Yes. We’re built around mobile servicing across London and Surrey. And that model suits e-bikes particularly well, because so many of them are awkward to carry, store or transport.

What should I do before the mechanic arrives?

Charge the battery to a sensible level, keep the charger nearby and note down any error messages you’ve seen. A short description of the fault speeds up diagnosis enormously.
